Are you hitting the road or air this Thanksgiving holiday? You’ll be in good company. AAA is predicting that 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving. That is one million more Thanksgiving travelers than last year, and the most since 2007.

The road mostly rules during this particular holiday. More than 89 percent of travelers will drive. With that in mind, here are some tips for keeping the family safe, calm, and entertained on the road this Thanksgiving.

Be prepared. Look at weather forecasts before you leave so you are aware of any storms you may encounter and make sure your vehicle is working properly before you leave with a routine maintenance check.

Expect delays. With millions of Americans hitting the road for the holidays, you’ll likely experience traffic delays. Leave early and give yourself plenty of time to make it to your destination safely.

Keep kids calm. Are you tired of hearing “are we there yet?” Beat boredom by stocking the car with toys, coloring books, DVDs, or an electronic device with their favorite games.

Pack snacks. Although it’s necessary to stop and stretch on a long road trip, snacks can help hold everyone over until the next meal. This can also help save a little money. Have water and everyone’s favorite snacks and drinks on hand for a car of happy travelers.

Remember why you’re traveling. Although long road trips can be hectic and sometimes frustrating, remember the reason you’re on the road. Take the time to share what you’re thankful for and enjoy the time spent together.
