The Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund is American Legion Auxiliary National President Pam Ray’s 2025-2026 fundraising focus. This program is dedicated to helping students who may not otherwise have the means to attend college. Every dollar raised goes directly toward providing scholarships that open doors, remove financial barriers, and inspire tomorrow’s leaders.

Education changes lives, and with your support, the ALA can help more deserving students afford the opportunity to pursue their dreams. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2024, 62.8% of high school graduates enrolled in college. That means more than a third did not. While there are many factors that influence a student’s decision to pursue higher education, it is often because of financial barriers. Scholarships — like those offered through the ALA’s Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund — help close that gap.

In 2024, the ALA increased its annual Spirit of Youth Scholarship funding to $100,000, marking a significant commitment to closing financial gaps for young people. To meet this expanded financial need, the American Legion Auxiliary Foundation made the Spirit of Youth Scholarship Fund a top priority, donating $20,000 to the ALA for this program in FY24 and committing to $45,000 in FY25, with expectations for continued growth in years to come.

A U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics news release from April 2025 demonstrates that education pays. In 2024, 78.1% of associate degree recipients and 69.6% of bachelor’s degree recipients were employed, compared with only 40% of recent high school dropouts. The ALA’s Spirit of Youth scholarships make it possible for more young people to achieve these stronger career outcomes.
