ALA recognizes its 2024 Public Spirit Award recipient

Posted On: Monday, 26 August 2024

The American Legion Auxiliary’s prestigious Public Spirit Award recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations for contributions that positively impact communities through service to our veterans, military, and their families.

Every year, we celebrate those who make a difference through a creative body of work or even a single generous act. Previous recipients have included U.S. presidents and government officials, as well as regular citizens who saw a need and acted.

Lisa Williamson, 2023-2024 ALA national president, chose Wreaths Across America (WAA) to be the recipient of this year’s Public Spirit Award.

“The Public Spirit Award is more than just a recognition — it is a tribute to organizations who go above and beyond in their efforts to honor and uplift those who have served our country,” Williamson said from the convention stage.

To accept the award on stage on behalf of WAA’s Executive Director Karen Worcester was Jeff Pierce, WAA’s director of broadcasting and media partnerships.

“I am very humbled to accept this award,” Worcester said via Zoom. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

In August 2023, the American Legion Auxiliary national organization joined forces with Wreaths Across America to build a stronger awareness of each group’s common missions while supporting fundraising efforts nationwide.

Wreaths Across America is an incredible organization whose mission is to remember our fallen U.S. veterans, honor those who serve, and teach our children the value of freedom. Wreaths Across America’s mission so closely aligns with the ALA’s as they continue to pay homage to our heroes after they have passed from this world.

After participating in Wreaths Across America Day while vice president, Williamson was hooked and wanted to participate in the entire WAA Day caravan and get more involved. This led to her decision to honor WAA with the Public Spirit Award.

“I couldn’t think of a better organization to receive this award,” Williamson said during convention.

WAA, a nonprofit organization, was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.

Wreaths Across America has participating locations in more than 4,220 communities nationwide, engaging volunteers and organizations like American Legion Auxiliary units in educational initiatives, and sharing veteran stories of service and sacrifice.

Please congratulate this year’s Public Spirit Award winner, Wreaths Across America! To see a list of previous award recipients, visit www.ALAforVeterans.org/Public-Spirit-Award. For more information on WAA, go here
