If the veteran through whom you are eligible is living, you will need to know their The American Legion ID number. This is required on the application.
If you are a female veteran who served, you are eligible in your own right and do not need to be a current member of The American Legion in order to join The American Legion Auxiliary.
You will be joined into the headquarters unit of the state that you currently live. You can transfer to a unit in your local area at any time. Membership dues vary by state, you will see a chart of rates on the next page.
If the veteran through whom you are eligible is deceased, you may be required to provide documentation to verify their eligibility to the state you join or to a local auxiliary unit if you choose to transfer. Acceptable eligibility documents include:
DD214 Discharge Papers
Official military orders
Official military service citations/awards
Letters related to the veteran’s military service. Must be on official government letterhead
Certificate from the VA records center in St. Louis
Date from the back of older discharges
