Many of us have a special veteran in our life, whether it’s a spouse, parent, grandparent, child, sibling, friend, or another loved one. At the American Legion Auxiliary, we understand the importance of honoring those who serve by supporting veterans, military, and their families. We asked some of you to tell us about the veteran in your life. Over the next few weeks we will share some of your stories. Here are a few to get us started:

“My husband Keith Brown served in the US Marine Corps; my father Dale Hankins and my grandfather Curtis Sparrow both served in the Army, and I am proudest of my grandmother Bette Sparrow, who was a nurse in WWII in the army.”

“My father was a WWII Army veteran. He was one of the thousands that landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day. He talked about being “shell shocked.” Being very young and naive at the time, I actually thought a shell had exploded next to him. Years later, I realized he suffered from PTSD, something that was not addressed during his time. I honor and memory of my father and all of the brave men and women who have served.” —Carole Vernotico Baldwin

“My husband of 50 years, Glenn Quigg, spent 22 years in the Air Force. He followed in his father’s footsteps, who served in World War II. Our son followed next with 22 years in the Air Force, and now his son and daughter are in the Air Force. We are a proud military family.” —Karon Quigg

“My husband, Marvin served 21 years in the US Navy. My dad, James Madison (Bud) Horton served in the US Army. My father-in-law, Jim Mason served in the US Navy. I am blessed to have many special veterans in my life. ‬”
